Interview with the Managing Director, BEDC

credits: vml.com

Yep! Yep! this guy had an interview with the MD. Like I said, She would be called Mama F.

The interview turned out to be a good one. Though I wish I had said some more about the IT part. Still wish so.

The interview was held this past weekend, Saturday 10th October, 2015 to be precise. The first set of trainees, Batch 1 as we are called had a time out with her. We were sent a mail some minutes past 5pm on Friday notifying us about the interview. though late, it wasn't surprising to us. We had heard some rumours about it in the morning that same day. That brought a 'no travel' news to the people that would have loved to travel to Lagos (the destination for over 70% of us).

A list showing the order that we would follow was attached in the mail sent to us. I was 6th on the list. The timing showed that we would each spend 15mins. This was not to be. Lookman Ogboye, the first on the list, spent about 55 mins.

Wow! what were you talking about? we asked when he came out.

How many people on the panel?

What did they ask you?

Were the questions tough?

Those were questions we asked.

He told us about his CV being a focus at a point. That it was just Mama F and Mama K. that we would be asked what location we would like to work. we had to pick three in order of our preferences. This was also applied to departments. And that the question weren't tough but we would have to think fast.

I was called to go sit by the office of the MD when it was my turn to leave the training room we were waiting in. I met Chuks Philip sitting outside. He was to go in before me. Michael Dosunmu had just gone in. His blaring voice was distinct as I heard him answer the MD's questions. I sat for about two hours before it was my turn.

Sitting before the Mama F and Mama K, I responded to their questions. The first sets were;

Tell me about yourself.

Do you consider yourself an entrepreneur?

Define who an entrepreneur is?

With your definition, how can you be an entrepreneur in BEDC?

I answered them but had to answer again on the last one as Mama F was not satisfied. She wanted an answer that would show me adding value to the organisation. She didn't just want a worker. She wanted a solution provider. Someone that would add value to the organisation.

Words like 'give ideas that would cause an increase in the collection', 'Build up skills that are beneficial to the Company' would come in handy. I gave the earlier and others.

She asked of the periods I had spent in each department I had been. The departments I had not been to were crucial. Departments like Customer Care, Community Relations and the New Economy.

Then came the chart. The ATC&C versus the percent cost of power delivered. I looked at the chart. I gave her my observation. And she asked of their relationship to which I said 'inversely related'. at the end, She said 'Correct'. That was all I needed for that part.

Then She asked of IT. I would later find out that what she understood as IT varied a little from what I understood as IT. IT meant networking, internet and computers to me but in my conversation with her, I learnt I was to include the software part too. I had earlier said I worked with 21st century Technologies during my Industrial training. This she said was not included in my CV (She had read it all). It wasn't. I had submitted about two CVs to the company. Didn't know the one she had. Anyway, that told me she had a good memory as I had not seen her read it. She scribbled something on the CV below the last company I included.

And then I wanted to tell her of my software skills. A call came in. She picked and told Mama F she was done. I wanted to say more but she was already talking.  Haaaaa! I felt like getting up to say, 'I have more to say'. I told Mama K but I'm not sure if she took them down like the MD would have.

Going back, My choice of states; Edo, Ondo, Delta
For Departments; Protection, Control & Metering (PC&M), Industrial Metering, Planning and Construction.

She asked why. I explained. Maybe not exactly what she wanted to hear. Her face was not so approving.

Love & More - Act 1

Right from the first day I saw you, I was drawn to you. Not love at first sight, but an attraction that I still cherish today after 13 years.  I still remember the many walks we took when we started talking. My-o-my, I loved talking with you. I still do. Maybe I was listening more, now that I think of it. The one thing I recall was you made it easy to talk and thinking of the walks between White House (Engineering Building) and Computer science Building including other locations within the Obafemi Awolowo University community? Still cherish them. You have come to show me another part of life, completing me in areas I am not as strong. Still a journey for me but I cherish the process even though I sometimes react to the adjustments. I cherish the results though. I love it when you are happy. When you smile (even at my dry jokes). I love it when you excel at the things you do. formal and informal.  I appreciate your thoughtfulness to things. I guess it comes with you being so st...

Love & More - Act 2

It has been a while we had the movie night. We have some history with movie nights I must say. From the times in Akure, Lagos and now, Amstelveen.  Whenever we watch, it exciting. I enjoyed the action movies and then the love ones. I enjoy all of it anyway cos we watch together. the taking it back so you understand better is not so fun for me sha..me i have moved on in cases like that.....but anyways, i agree with you.......better to understand the context. When did we start watching movies together?   Before we got married I guess. I guess this was in Lagos before I took the job with BEDC. Not sure if we watched any on our own or always with Bukky and Busayo. But anyways..the history was formed. Cinemas. one thing I loved about Igbatoro, Akure was the Filmhouse Cinemas at the Akure Mall.  and then those cozy evening when we did nothing but watch a move together. Do you always stay up when we watch? Now I have to write that you might stay up with the first movie but...

The Many Walks with Kiity

Ever heard of the benefits of 30 minutes walk everyday?  I bet you have. Walking is a great way to improve or maintain our overall health. Just 30 minutes every make a change in your life. I took a walk for 1 hour once and I felt the effects. It was about 8km in all and I could feel my legs tingling when I finished. The next day, the muscles spoke and I was happy.  Kiity and I enjoy taking lots of walks. We did that a lot in Nigeria both individually and together. I enjoy it more when we do it together. Since we arrived the Netherlands in April this year, we have had several walks and I enjoy it more when we do it together.   Walking over a small bridge, De Poel, Amstelveen I decide to take walks for many reasons;  - To exercise. - To clear my head and away from the familiar - To see the environment and new places. - To breathe a different air. The most important is to talk. This is when I do it with Kiity. We have to talk about something as we go.  W...
