Bribe. Gifts. Benin Disco

So this happened early this morning.

I went to a customer's premise for the complaint resolution. He had been receiving outrageous bills like other customers have been (deliberate attempt by BEDC management I must add). He's a top man with the board of internal revenue for Delta state.

The bane of it all is that he said things about his position. he could link me up to better jobs. If I favoured him. He even added that if all turns out well, he'll do the needful, if I should use his words.

Hmm. Yes he said so.

I think of all the gifts that have been offered me by customers within the short time I have spent here. I have refused a lot of them. I only accept a customer transporting me when they come to the office for a complaint and require someone to join them to their location. Anything beyond that, my barometer trips.

What's a gift? Whats a bribe? How do I differentiate the two?

A bribe to me will be something given or received to corrupt judgement. A gift would then be something given. So a gift could be a bribe and may not be. And a bribe would always be a gift. Hmm, so my chain of thought goes to history. Our nation is the way it is as a result of the choices every leader both small and big have made with regards to corruption. never mind the fact that I speak of everyone, I'm probably guilty in my little way as a Nigerian. We have stories of past presidents that looted monies, we have stories of senators that have misappropriated public funds, we have stories of CEOs stealing company monies and many more.

Just the other day, I was at bank and noticed guys giving the customer care ladies money. First guy gave 1000 Naira, then the next gave 2000 Naira. and it was always shared between the two ladies. Gifts you can call that. It happens.

I am of the opinion that things should be done right. I find it hard to bend most times. Even if a superior says I should let it go. I believe things would be proper If we all made the right choices even when it doesn't benefit us,

As for the case above, I'm not letting this go. Even though I consider myself not in good terms with the management of BEDC as a result of their billing choices and other matters, some things are just right and should be left so.

The Vacation Idea

Kiity and I differ on this. What is a vacation? What is a retreat? Kiity made me think of retreat. To me, every time away from work is a vacation. This is my simple definition.  I recall when I was studying. The same definition applied. Anytime away from school is a vacation. When the school is not in session, we are on vacation. The same has applied to my work life.  But Kiity sees it differently. She had to google this and the AI overview gave the feedback below: A vacation is primarily for relaxation and fun, while a retreat focuses on personal growth, self-reflection, and often includes structured activities aimed at improving well-being Kiity is right by this definition. I have told her.  In my own world, it seems definitions are simple and when adhered to, makes my life simple. Where did all this come from? It came from a post Kiity made on Polarsteps about "our first Family Vacation". I looked at it and said we had done a lot of vacations in the past based o...

An Open Letter to Kunfaiyeoluwa

I would love to draft a long letter to you. But the thoughts and words captured above say a lot that I want you to carry on for the rest of your life.  You indeed have a legacy to cherish and to build on. Your mum, grand-mums and great-grand-mums are one of the strongest and determined persons I have met and I know the seed lives on in you. Yes, I did come to know them all and I see the foundation you have to lean on. You are Royalty both Spiritually and by Land Origin. 1 Pet 2:9 reminds me of your spiritual royalty and the knowledge that you are of the origin of men who have reigned as Kings in Nigeria both in Kogi and Ondo States. Therefore, let the words scribed above by the Queen of the Southern Nigerian Kingdom bring light to you today and for every other day. I was watching a movie during the past weekend and it showcased a Father who stood by his daughter even when the whole community were against her. I would like you to know that I would be by your side from Day 1 t...

The Many Walks with Kiity

Ever heard of the benefits of 30 minutes walk everyday?  I bet you have. Walking is a great way to improve or maintain our overall health. Just 30 minutes every make a change in your life. I took a walk for 1 hour once and I felt the effects. It was about 8km in all and I could feel my legs tingling when I finished. The next day, the muscles spoke and I was happy.  Kiity and I enjoy taking lots of walks. We did that a lot in Nigeria both individually and together. I enjoy it more when we do it together. Since we arrived the Netherlands in April this year, we have had several walks and I enjoy it more when we do it together.   Walking over a small bridge, De Poel, Amstelveen I decide to take walks for many reasons;  - To exercise. - To clear my head and away from the familiar - To see the environment and new places. - To breathe a different air. The most important is to talk. This is when I do it with Kiity. We have to talk about something as we go.  W...
