Mutaz Essa Barshim and the Fosbury Flop

I watched Barshim this evening competing in the diamond league. His attitude drew me into the game as I scanned through the sport channels on the decoder. He was spectacular, confident about the sport, the high jump. Barshim is from Qatar. Not that it matters anyway. I was more concerned with the Fosbury flop. A style in High jump I read about on Okechukwu Ofili's ' How Laziness Saved my Life'. A style ignored by every other country till it won the gold medal for the inventor, Dick Fosbury. He and his colleague from the United States adopted it in the 1968 olympics. He had used this style in 1965 while competing in a game but it didn't attract others as it was a mere style to everyone. He ended up clinching a 2.24m, winning the gold medal. Then, it became the style! Barshim did a 2.43m this evening. 0.02m under the World record of 2.45 clinched by  Javier Sotomayor of Cuba in 1993. His first World record had been 2.43m in 1988. Something worth remembering. I see...

The greater ones are not yet born

Sitting at Yeni's valedictory service listening to a graduand singing 'I'll always love you' by Whitney Houston, I think of my time. Yes, my times. I see a young girl who could grow to a powerful musician in a short time. Someone everyone would have to reckon with. Then I think of those whose names have been stamped on the sands of time in my generation. And I realise they weren't there some few year's back. There were other names. Funny enough, there would be other names for a short while and this girl singing before me could be one of them. I also think of the good side and the bad side. A quote I saw some days back said something like....its not our fault that we do this, its just our turn. Hmmm, a way to put it.  Our parents had their time, they did things, both good and bad. I've had mine and still having it and I've done mine. Then I realise that whatever has been done so far is an inkling to what will be done in the future. A sprinter ...

Made friends via writing this unscribbled notes.

Never thought my online diary would ever turn out to be something people read. Its not in any creative format or a well structured format. I just tell the day as it is but then as plain as it is, I have had people contact me about a thing or two I wrote about...for example the Naptin programme, bedc interview and the likes. I have always helped in the ways I could.

Germany wins 2014

As simple as it sounds. I witnessed this. Germany's Goetze.....scored the winner. A great goal. Something must have been right with the decision made by the coach to bring him in. It could have gone either way though. Now we can rest. Abi I had already started resting since Nigeria fell out. The game sort of ends when they lose. Except for the finals like today's.

World cup goes extra time

Sitting on the arm chair watching the most watched game in the world go into extra time, I consider it could go either way. I had more hopes for Germany taking it without any extra time added but the Argentinians have showed that they didn't get to the final by luck (something I believe Nigeria held onto during the four games we had-we played on the average). Would have been shocking if the Argentines took it during the first 90 minutes but after watching this, won't be surprised.

Weekend with Tumbus and the Ilohs

Why do I find it hard or rather amusing that I do not listen to her? She tells me this and that and then at the end I find out that she was right. Not once, not twice. Even lost count. And it happens over and over. I'm not that bad anyway. I have listened sometime. I had a wonderful weekend. Spent the Saturday bussing(I can use this here now- shebi I name my own blog, don't say wrong mentality o) through a section of the Lagos metropolis with kitty. Starting out on the Island to the mainland. My plan, see Tumi,Busayo and Azubuike. I did see them. It was fun. First was Busayo who was at home. I had called Tumi earlier. He had to work. And then Azubuike. I spent a while talking with Busayo on the board interview he attended recently with the Sahara power folks. He was asked a question on Rankin cycle. A process the mechanical engineering guys talked about a lot while I was on training. As we talked, a call came in. It was Azubuike. He had just woken up. His tooth ached. And he...

LuluKitty goes MSC.

Today. Yea, it's really this day. kitty bags the Msc. Some work I would say. The time she put into it also. Mehn! having some extra degree could be this 'easy'? especially at Obafemi Awolowo University. Happy for you dear! Wish you the best in your future endeavours. You know say plenty work still dey sha.

Nairaland.com still down. Seun, I am counting o!

Imagine me. For the first time in a long while I have opened my blog more than three, four times in a week to write as I cannot access a website that actually takes a portion of my time, nairaland.com. what is happening I wonder? Is Seun Osewa, the owner working on something fabulous. Iyanu, call Seun to order. He is keeping a lot of people on hold. Is it money? We can donate o! Nairaland has been down for more than 26 hours at this time that I write. And then for some seconds I thought the domain name has expired but mehn! that would be fatal (You know how many people would pay more than $1600 to have it?-Including....lets not talk too much).  I'm still waiting just like I did some time back but that didn't take this long. Can't wait to see what he has to offer.

The Midst of the Year 2014!

Its the midst of the year. June precisely. Strange though but writing has become work to me. Ever since the Writer's bureau course started. I have sent in only one assignment out of 10. Lazy me right! And to think it was November I sent in that assignment. Wow! Are you that......ehm Kunle, You are okay. Too many engineering things covering you up right now. Talking about Engineering. Hmm. A long story. I have attended interviews like never before. NAPTIN has been instrumental in making this a possibility. Big ups to them!  E bi like say na only the Electrical engineers dey enjoy this interviews sha o .  My Mechanical engineering brothers never even attend one . Now that's why I feel somehow. Since I finished the NGSDP programme, I've attended interviews with Microtechnologies Nigeria Limited (didn't hear from them- probably didnt fit), Schneider electric Nigeria (HR said they had others that had more experience), Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (This was the b...

NairaBooks.com and Me.

I've invested about 200k  in this project and it seems like men, I'm just starting. The world of business seems to be different.  I originally planned it out to be a hub of bookstores showing the location of books. That would eventually be bookhobbs. now I have an online store and its going all well. Except that I don't enjoy the whole bustle involved. bookhobbs has to be completed.  My staff seem to managing it well. And then the whole thing about paying people 'salary'. Never done it before the bookstore opened. Anyways, I'm learning.  The main plan for the books is to develop a love for it amongst people through low pricing and availability. How would I get people to love reading? hmm...I don't have to (Ehen!). I just need to get what they love. does that sound OK to you. I'm thinking out in a  wide way. Publishing could be the next thing. Some African stories need to be told.

A new year. The expectations.

I happen to love the slogans we get from our churches. Slogans that take us or rather we take along through the year. Last year was a year of double portion blessings. Blessings that come in two different folds. Did I get my portion? I haven't thought so deep on that. I think I missed out on it. But I did get a blessing that stands out for the year. April 5 would be the anniversary of that day.  The day I signed a pact. He has kept me for real. This year according to the Foursquare gospel church happens to be a year of fulfilled desires. Today's service said it all. Our focus should not be on ourselves but on God. We tend to ask for ourselves a lot. Its not a bad thing though but we should have Godly desires even as we want things. Not all desires would be fulfilled. God can fulfil all desires but he would not fulfil the desires that would be of no good to us. He knows more. The most important I learned today was through taking a look at my bible after hearing all he s...
